At the international media launch of the 2 Series Active Tourer BMW quietly announced that they would also be launching a Plug-In Hybrid derivative of the first forward driven BMW.
The 2 Series AT PHEV will use a rear mounted electric motor to create an efficient all wheel drive system coupled presumably to the same 3 cylinder petrol engine seen elsewhere in the range. However I've read that BMW will offer the Active Tourer Hybrid in both front and all wheel drive configurations, I'm not sure how that's expected to play out. For the AWD models expect that full electric driving will in fact be rear wheel drive, so perhaps for the fan boys the AT won't be such blasphemy.
Naturally BMW has not mentioned final figures yet but the internet seems to expect somewhere north of 190 hp and 0-60 in under 8s. So if I'm doing this right expect 195 hp and 7.9 to 60...
While both the petrol and diesel Active Tourers will be on sale by the end of 2014 the PHEV 2er will likely not show its face officially officially until sometime in 2015.
